Aloha, Namaste, Sun Yoga

In Sun Yoga Hawaii we share life each new day living from the essence of aloha, recognizing and bowing to the divine light within each one of us.

Aloha is much more than a simple hello or good-bye. Aloha is a way of life, to live with love, to share kindness, to be gentle, to practice patience and value harmony. We understand that we are no more or less than any other human being on Earth, and so we treat others the way we would like to be treated, with warmth, with LOVE.

Namaste, pronounced ‘na-ma-stay’, is a salutation in India, mother land of yoga, just as we would say “hello” or “goodbye” in the United Sates. Namaste is typically said with the hands pressed together and held near the heart, with the head bowed. As we study this Sanskrit word more deeply, we discover that is holds many meanings. Some of these translations include:

- “I honor the place in you which is of love, truth, light, and peace.”

- “I bow to the divine in you.”

- “I honor the sacredness and equality in us all.”

The following definition of Namaste is one Aadil Palkhivala wrote in a Yoga Journal article:

The gesture Namaste represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another. “Nama” means bow, “as” means I, and “te” means you. Therefore, Namaste literally means “bow me you” or “I bow to you.”

For a teacher and student, Namaste allows two individuals to come together energetically to a place of connection and timelessness, free from the bonds of ego-connection. If it is done with deep feeling in the heart and with the mind surrendered, a deep union of spirits can blossom.

Sun Yoga Hawaii we allow love, peace, connection, appreciation, kindness, compassion, unity, and harmony to blossom and nurture us as we practice yoga each and every day. Yoga is much more than physical exercise. The physical poses we practice known as asanas help us in caring for physical bodies but also in focusing our mind, and allowing our spirit to blossom all the wonderful qualities that are our inherent human virtues.
